SPAIN INVESTS 140 BILLION EUROS IN DIGITALIZATION


(July 23rd 2020) The Prime Minister of Spain, Mr. Pedro Sánchez, has announced a plan that will move 140 billion euros for digitalization in the next five years. The government has published the Digital Spain 2025 (España Digital 2025) agenda with 70 billion euros, and the same amount will be invested in the following two years.


In the agenda, around 20 billion will be public investments, of which, 15 billion euros will come from the various EU programmes and new financing instruments under the Next Generation EU Recovery Plan, which defines digitalization as one of the main priorities. The agenda calculates 50 billion euros from the private sector. The agenda will help relaunch economic growth, reduce inequality, increase productivity and take advantage of the opportunities offered by new technologies.


The Government has outlined several objectives, starting with digital connectivity for example for young people who work in urban areas and live in rural areas. The final target is to ensure that 100% of the population has digital connectivity.


In addition, leading the deployment of mobile 5G and the industrial revolution 4.0, along with strengthening the digital skills of workers are important focus areas. An objective is also to close the digital gap in education.
